That shift matters to the aftermarket. AAPEX research published in 2026 showed that many industry participants still expected demand for parts and services to grow, with high new-vehicle prices and longer vehicle ownership frequently mentioned as supporting factors. Consumers are clearly more price-sensitive, but quality remains an important purchasing consideration. Older-car repair is therefore not simply becoming a race toward the cheapest part.Suspension maintenance illustrates the point. On a high-mileage vehicle, wear rarely affects only the shock absorber itself. Years of vibration, road impact and material aging can also affect an automotive rubber bushing or shock absorber bushing. Replacing the main damper while leaving worn connection points in service may allow noise, vibration or looseness to remain, creating another repair visit later.
Protection parts can be equally important. A shock absorber dust cover is inexpensive compared with the damper assembly, but it helps shield sensitive areas from road grit, moisture and debris. When an old cover is cracked or hardened, reusing it during a suspension repair can expose the replacement component to the same environment that contributed to earlier wear.
For distributors and importers, this changes how mature vehicle applications should be valued. A model that ended production years ago may still support steady demand if large numbers remain on the road. Demand for shock absorber and accessories can continue long after new-vehicle sales disappear, especially as aging vehicles move into more frequent maintenance cycles.
The purchasing lesson is simple: mature applications should not be judged only by production age. Vehicle population, repair frequency and long-term parts availability matter more. Suppliers that can maintain stable dimensions, rubber performance and repeatable batch quality are better positioned to support this part of the aftermarket than suppliers focused only on constantly adding new SKUs.
