EVs Are Coming Out of Warranty, but the Aftermarket Is Running Short of Technicians

2026,10,12
China's EV market is entering a new phase. The competition is no longer only about selling more vehicles, but also about who can maintain them once warranties expire. Based on the common eight-year warranty period for batteries, motors, and electronic control systems, a growing number of early EVs are entering the post-warranty market. Industry estimates suggest that more than 10 million new energy vehicles could come out of warranty in China over the three years starting in 2026.

Repair capability, however, has not expanded at the same pace. By the end of June 2026, China had 48.97 million new energy vehicles in operation, while the estimated shortage of qualified aftersales technicians reached about 824,000. For many independent workshops, the challenge is not willingness but capability. EV repair increasingly requires high-voltage safety procedures, dedicated diagnostic equipment, and knowledge of battery management and vehicle control systems.

That does not mean the post-warranty opportunity is limited to batteries, motors, and electronics. Industry data for the first quarter of 2026 showed that overall workshop traffic weakened while EV visits continued to grow. Tires, suspension, dampers, and other conventional chassis services therefore offer a more practical entry point for many independent repair businesses.

A workshop does not have to become a full EV specialist before serving this market. Shock absorber and accessories, tires, and control arms are already familiar service categories. At the same time, the higher curb weight of many battery-electric vehicles places greater loads on suspension systems, while quieter powertrains make chassis noise and vibration easier for drivers to notice.

For components such as automotive rubber bushing and shock absorber bushing, material aging, dynamic stiffness, fatigue durability, and batch consistency directly affect vibration isolation, ride comfort, and long-term stability. For distributors and repair networks, purchasing decisions therefore need to consider more than price. Product consistency, vehicle coverage, and dependable supply matter as well. Components such as vibration damping rubber bushing can generate steady inspection and replacement demand as EV fleets age.

As more EVs move beyond warranty, the real question is not simply whether independent workshops can repair batteries. It is whether they can identify the part of the aftermarket that matches their existing skills. For many repair businesses, the most realistic opportunity may already be in the chassis work they know best.
