Under the Camera, Cheap Parts Are Getting Harder to Sell

2026,09,02
For years, many automotive parts moved from distributors to workshops with little attention from drivers. Most customers cared about the repair result, not the brand, origin or price of every component installed. That is changing.
Smartphones and short-form video are making repairs more visible. Customers can record the process, compare prices online and ask why a particular part or brand was selected. What looks like a change in repair-shop behavior is actually reaching further upstream into the automotive aftermarket.
Suspension repair is a good example. When replacing a shock absorber, drivers may notice a strut mount, automotive rubber bushing or shock absorber dust cover for the first time. Components once selected almost entirely by professionals are now being questioned by end users.
Why does this part need replacing? Why this brand? Why is another product cheaper online?
For distributors and aftermarket buyers, these questions make price-only competition more difficult.
A low-cost bushing may save money at purchase but create higher costs if material consistency varies between batches. A dust cover with unstable dimensions can cause fitment problems. Incorrect application information for a mount can lead to returns, repeat repairs and customer complaints.
This is why the lowest purchase price does not always produce the lowest total cost.
Buyers sourcing shock absorber and accessories increasingly need to consider vehicle coverage, dimensional consistency, material stability, traceability, reliable delivery and the suppliers ability to resolve quality problems.
For manufacturers, the change is equally important. A small production inconsistency can travel through the entire supply chain-from factory to importer, distributor and workshop-before finally becoming a complaint visible to end customers.
Short-form video is therefore doing more than making repairs transparent. It is shortening the distance between the factory and the driver.
As parts become easier to compare, aftermarket competition is moving beyond one familiar question: Who can offer the lowest price?
The more important question is becoming: Whose products can distributors sell with confidence, workshops install with confidence, and drivers trust once they are on the vehicle?
For automotive component manufacturers, that may be the real competition in a more transparent aftermarket.
